Ask Dr. Man- Nose Job

Dear Dr. Man, I desperately want a nose job. I am very happy with everything about my body- EXCEPT my nose. I have this unsightly bump at the top of my nose and I’ve even had people tell me that if I didn’t have this bump, I could be a model. Can you please tell me more about the nose job procedure and what it entails? Also, what is the recovery like? I’m in college and I need to know how much time I need to recover.

Surgery to reshape the nose (otherwise known as rhinoplasty) is one of the most common of all plastic surgery procedures. It is common among men and women of all ages, young and old. You are not alone- many people have been affected by stares and comments by people they know and even strangers.

Rhinoplasty can be used to reshape the nose in many ways, depending on the patient’s needs and desires. Some of these ways include reducing or increasing the size of the nose, changing the shape of the tip or the bridge, narrowing the span of the nostrils, or even changing the angle between your nose and your upper lip. Rhinoplasty can also be used to correct injuries or birth defects, or to help relieve breathing problems.

The best candidates for rhinoplasty are people who are looking to improve their appearance, are physically healthy, psychologically stable and realistic in their expectations.

Rhinoplasty can be performed under local with IV sedation or general anesthesia, depending on the extent of the procedure and on what you and your surgeon prefer. Rhinoplasty usually takes an hour or two; however, complicated procedures may take longer. When the surgery is complete, a splint will be applied to help your nose maintain its new shape. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints also may be placed in your nostrils to stabilize the septum, the dividing wall between the air passages.

When rhinoplasty is performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, complications are infrequent and usually minor. You can reduce these risks by carefully following your surgeon's instructions. In the days following surgery, your face will be bruised and swollen, but this passes. Each day, your nose will begin to look better. Healing is a gradual process; and some subtle swelling may be present for months after surgery. Since you’re in college, I recommend having the procedure done during one of your breaks or over the summer.

Rhinoplasty can do wonders to enhance appearance and boost self-confidence. When meeting with your plastic surgeon, discuss your expectations and realistic options for you.

Ask Dr. Man - Liposuction

Who is a good candidate for liposuction?

Patients who are good candidates for liposuction have ideally limited areas of excess of fat. These people they tend to be otherwise in relative good physical shape, have a relatively normal weight to height ratio, and are concerned about some areas of localized excess of fat.

Patients who are likely to benefit from suction are enjoying good health, have the right expectations, and are aware of the limitations of this technique.

Liposuction with body jet (relatively one of the new techniques), coupled with laser liposuction (such as the 1444 nm by lutronic) , done on the ART (articulating, reclining, tilting) table offers significant improvement contour for most of our body areas.

Patients benefit by looking better, feeling better about their appearance, enjoying an improvement in clothing, as they will have now better body image. When combined with a program of good nutritional diet such as (ideal protein) and correct exercises, these patients will have a long term of success.

Let’s take an example of suction of the abdomen:

When considering excess abdominal fat, it is important to remember that the ideal abdominal shape is determined by the relationship of the upper, mid and lower abdomen and the love handles. It is important to evaluate whether or not posture abnormality exists. By pinching skin of the abdomen the amount of subcutaneous fat is noted. In some instances it appears as if the belly is fat but it is possible that that fat is not a subcutaneous but rather intra abdominal (omental fat), in which case losing weight first (with ideal protein) and then pursue with the suction later. The obvious common subcutaneous fat collection is where liposuction will make dramatic improvements.

Ask Dr. Man - Dermabrasion vs. Microdermabrasion

What is the difference between Dermabrasion and Microdermabrasion?

Both methods are used to improve the surface of the skin Dermabrasion acts to mechanically remove sharp edges of acne scars and other acquired scars. This technique blends acne scars into the surrounding facial skin, making them less noticeable. The surgeon uses a certain tool that has sanding capabilities and with his experience he knows how deep and far he has to go until he gets the best results.

Microdermabrasion; is a finer method that uses aluminum oxide or other crystals with high speed pressurized pump. Treatment results in more superficial abrasion.
Dermabrasion treats deeper larger scars better than Microdermabrasion.

Ask Dr. Man - Breast Augmentation

Does breast enlargement reduce the risk of suicide?

A study published in the scientific form in the aesthetic surgery by Dr. Thomas Joiner, Jr., PhD, a professor of psychology in the Florida state university suggest that suicide rates in breast augmentation patients is lower than the expected rate when these patients’ demographic and other pre-surgery characteristics are taken into account.
Even though the literature in the past suggested otherwise, a relatively new survey showed otherwise. The mechanism for this protective effect is embedded in the increased satisfaction with their body image. (Aesthetic Surg J 2003;23:370-37)
